Westbury Music and Arts Festival will come to a close on Sunday following two weeks of events and musical performances spread across venues in the town.

Now in its sixth year, the festival brings together music, arts and crafts groups and has seen everything from history walks and workshops to performances by established acts such as jazz piano virtuoso John Law and saxophonist Sam Crockatt.

Events also included The Big Draw at Matravers School on Saturday, which gave people an opportunity to work with artist Peter Rush to create beetles and dragonflies by heating and shaping plastic cutlery.

Elsewhere, Bristol String Quartet played a gig at West End Baptist Church on Monday and Dr Keith Hooper gave a talk on Jane Austen and her work at Westbury Library on Wednesday.

Chairman of the festival Roy Inwood said: “I would definitely say that so far this has been the best festival yet. We have had more people coming to the events and the acts have been marvellous.

“The Big Draw at Matravers has become a regular event and it was once again a very big success this year, with lots of people coming along and enjoying themselves.

“Other highlights were John Law and Sam Crockatt making their first appearances at the festival, which were complete sellouts, but all of the musicians have been really tremendous.”

One of the most popular events saw the return of festival regulars Finnegan’s Wake at The Laverton, playing their mixture of Irish jigs, reels and polkas, as well as a few traditional Irish songs.

Frank Hackett, who plays accordion in Finnegan’s Wake, said: “The concert was a great success and a sellout, and the audience were fantastic.”

The penultimate event tomorrow will see musician Luke Concannon, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Sam Kelly and Leander Morales perform at The Laverton along with other artists.

Mr Inwood added: “I should think that the last few events will be sellouts as they are regulars and always go down really well. It should be a fun celebration and a great way to finish the festival.”
