The inaugural house relay competition at Melksham Oak School followed days in which the year groups had battled it out in blistering heat, and the relay competition served as the climax to Sports Week.
The four houses, Castor, Omega, Polaris and Sirius, had to field relay teams in each year group with a difference. In Years 7-9, each team had to contain two girls and two boys.
Then there was a staff and sixth form relay to close out the day which was ‘tweaked’ slightly so that each member of this race ran 50m.
“This was not a comment on our staff’s fitness,” asserted assistant head Adrian Blowers, thanking all the staff and students who helped make it such a successful day.
Each team had four staff and four students, again of both sexes.
As headteacher Stephen Clark said: “This type of competition embodies the team ethos that we are embracing through this new house system as we drive to be a ‘great’ school.
“It has been brilliant to see our staff and young people so behind this venture.”
The relay was an amazing day, with the whole school passionately cheering their respective houses on. The addition of all the points over the week saw Omega House emerge as the Competition Cup champions for 2013.
