A giant scarf made in aid of Winsley’s Dorothy House Hospice was rolled out last Sunday.

The super garment, which is 3,000m long, has been made by a team of hundreds of volunteers who have been knitting segments and donating wool.

The project was launched by The Rising Sun, in Winsley Road, Bradford on Avon, in January 2012, with the completed scarf covering the distance between the pub and the charity’s Winsley base.

Landlady Liz Northeast said: “It is a relief we have finished but it has been very rewarding.

“It was a good opportunity for people who can’t often do the physical fundraising activities to get involved.

“The response from people has been great. We have had donations from as far as Gibraltar through people knowing people.”

During the scarf’s unveiling, it was rolled out in pieces, up to 100m long, from a Land Rover, as part of the journey from the pub.

Money from the fundraiser is still being counted but £500 was donated in buckets on Sunday while the pub has raised £11,270 for Dorothy House through events and challenges, since 2006.

Mrs Northeast said: “Sunday went absolutely brilliantly and we were relieved we had enough to get from the pub to Dorothy House. There were quite a lot of people watching and cheering us along the way which was very nice.”

The scarf will now be made into individual scarves, blankets and dog beds.

Emily Knight, from Dorothy House’s community fundraising team, said: “It is absolutely incredible and there was a real party atmosphere on Sunday. We are overwhelmed by the support from everyone who took part, this has been something very different which has allowed a lot of people to get involved.”
