A man caught stealing a pint of milk from Trowbridge’s Roundstone Nursery has given £200 to the centre as an apology.

The 46-year-old, who lives in Trowbridge, was stopped by police after taking the pint from outside the nursery, which is just yards from the town’s police station in Polebarn Road, last Thur-sday morning.

The nursery will be using the money to buy two new bikes for its children to enjoy.

Cindy Kennedy, 50, who runs the nursery, said: “The police rang and said the man had offered the money through a local resolution rather than going to court.

“They then brought him around here, he gave me the cash and said he was very sorry. The milk has been taken a few times recently and hopefully this will bring it to an end. We needed some new bikes and the money was a nice surprise, so it is a win-win situation for us.”

A local resolution sees minor offences such as petty theft brought to a conclusion through an agreement between the victim, the police and the person who committed the crime.

PC Jamie Darvill, community beat manager, said: “The use of the local resolution in this case has really benefited the victim and has avoided what could have been long drawn out court proceedings, which can take up both the victim’s time and remove officers from frontline duties.”

Mrs Kennedy said the nursery should have the new bikes in September after the summer holidays.

Roundstone Nursery has 16 children registered for the new term and would welcome more youngsters.
