More events are expected to take place in Trowbridge Park, now that Trowbridge Town Council has taken over control of the land from Wiltshire Council.

The town council believe the timing of the community asset transfer, which mean the authority will oversee the park’s maintenance and event planning, is fitting, with the new cinema complex in St Stephen’s Place opening in October and plans to move Trowbridge Mus-eum to Courtfield House progressing.

They see the park as a connection between the two projects as well as the Civic Centre and Town Hall.

Mayor Cllr David Halik said: “I am pleased to oversee this transfer, returning the park to its rightful home, and look forward to all the new developments taking place around what will become our cultural quarter.”

A long-term problem in the park is the pond, which has become an eyesore after its pump was vandalised during the winter, leading to low water levels and a build-up of litter.

Before the transfer, Wiltshire Council agreed £2,500 worth of repair work which will see the pond get a new pump, which will be put in a more vandal-proof location.

The town council also expect to complete a deal soon to buy five acres of land near Trowbridge Rugby Club’s new ground, in Devizes Road, Hilperton, which they intend to turn into sports pitches. They will wait until the club have settled into their new ground – they are due to move in September.
