Hundreds of people lined the streets of Melksham on Saturday, as Carnival Queen Michelle Brightwell led the town’s annual procession.

Spectators enjoyed an array of colourful floats from local schools, clubs and businesses, following Michelle, who was travelling in a blue Mercedes convertible.

There were also dance displays by troops including Frome Charisma Twirlers and the Infinity Dance Team, as well as music from calypso singer Antigua Joe.

Sophie Palmer, 14, was there with her friends. She said: “I’ve enjoyed it. I think my favourite thing has probably been the dancers.”

Spectator Sandra Stacey said: “The weather has been amazing. It really gets people out to enjoy themselves on days like this.”

Carnival secretary Beth Dark said: “It was wonderful. I have never seen so much community spirit. The crowd was five-deep in places.”

After the parade, Antigua Joe’s was named the best float, with the Manor School winning as best school.

Miss Dark said: “The Manor School had an All Around the World theme. Every person on the float was from a different area of the world.

“They had the most beautiful costumes – they were absolutely adorable. And the best walking group was won by It’s In The Bag, who were phenomenal, promoting awareness of testicular cancer.”

The parade was organised by a team of volunteers, who helped set out the route.

Miss Dark said: “The marshals did an absolutely fantastic job. They do a very difficult job, but they were brilliant, a real credit to the town.

“It was a really successful day and we’re already looking to the next events we’re going to be hosting.”
