A couple from Trow-bridge who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last week, said their secret to a long and happy marriage is to never sleep on an argument.
Jack and Betty Burke, from Lynwood Drive, met in the 1950s when they both worked at Cater, Stoffel and Fortt, a shop in Bath.
Mr Burke, 82, said: “When we met that was it. I never looked anywhere else.”
Mr Burke then went into the Army but after two years of national service he returned to Bath and the couple married in Oldfield Park Methodist Church, Bath, in 1953.
The couple, who lived in Bath all their life until moving to Lynwood Drive nearly 12 years ago, had their daughter, Hazel Packer, four years later, then their son, Alan, four years after that.
They have four grandchildren and said they looked forward to having great grandchildren soon.
Mr Burke enjoys reading and until recently gardening, but he now dedicates his time to looking after his wife, who has been wheelchair bound for the last 36 years due to a number of health reasons, including arthritis.
Mrs Burke, 86, used to make cards and tapestries, when she wasn’t looking after the children, but now enjoys surfing the internet on her Samsung tablet and emailing and texting her grandchildren.
She said: “We never thought we would reach 60 years, but we feel really proud. Friends and family said they had a job to find any 60th anniversary cards in the shop.”
