Binmen could go on strike again in their fight for better pay.

Around 40 members of the GMB union flew flags and waved banners outside FCC Environment in Riverway, Trowbridge on Monday as they took part in a one-day stoppage. Now the union says it will discuss more strikes.

FCC Environment runs Wiltshire Council’s bin collection services across west Wiltshire and the company brought in extra staff to ensure collections took place.

Carole Vallelly, a GMB regional organiser for the area, said: “We’ve had a really strong show of solidarity from our members. What we want now is for FCC Environment to negotiate with us, as we’ve not heard anything so far.”

Employees want to discuss a pay rise with the company and claim that management has not opened negotiations with them. However, FCC Environment said it is keen to meet with employees and open discussions.

“We worked hard to ensure we maintained as much of the collection service as possible,” a spokesman said.

“We brought in additional personnel from other operations and had management out on rounds to ensure we provided the service to people during the strike action.”

Staff returned to work on Tuesday, although FCC Environment employees have refused to carry out overtime this week as part of their protests.

Ms Vallelly said the union and its members who work for FCC Environment will be meeting to discuss plans for potential further strikes next Monday.

Wiltshire Councillor Toby Sturgis, the cabinet member responsible for waste, said: “The reports I had were that the contractors brought in reinforcements and cleared up the backlog pretty quickly, and the strike didn’t cause as many problems as it could have.”
