FURTHER to the recent correspondence regarding Trowbridge Town Hall, may I respectfully remind Trowbridge town councillors that they have no mandate from the people of Trowbridge to take over the old Town Hall.

You will, of course, remember that a public meeting was called last March when approximately 420 people voted against the proposition for the town council to purchase, on our behalf, the town hall for £1. About eight people voted in favour.

In 1974 Wiltshire County Council took the building from the people of Trowbridge to use as a court room. Now they have no further use for it they wish to return it to the townspeople, the majority of which have no wish to pay for its renovation (£3,000,000) maintenance and upkeep. Being a Grade II listed building, there is no doubt it will be well looked after by the present owners and if not, they are quite at liberty to sell it to a private developer who will, doubtless, find a good use for the building.

May I also remind Trowbridge town councillors (especially the 13 that voted for it) that election time is fast approaching (May 2007) together with precept time for fixing next year's budget, when you will, no doubt, be reducing our local rate by the amount you increased it last year (48 per cent).

A number of Trowbridge residents have joined together to form a group to be known as Trowbridge Residents Against Town Council Tax. We are looking for a few more residents to join us to fight next year's May council elections and oppose the 13 members of the present council who voted for the Town Hall purchase. We will be completely independent of any political party, with a common obligation to curb the spending of our money by Trowbridge Town Council.
