NEW homes could be built above disused mines in Bradford on Avon, despite a storm of protest from locals.
Planners have been recommended to give permission for a cul-de-sac of five detached houses with carports off Elms Cross Drive. Oakfield Farm Products, which runs a mushroom farm there, wants to build on the land.
Bradford on Avon Town Council object to the plans, saying the area is already congested and the site should be considered for employment or industrial use because it has been used for mining or mushroom farming over the past 200 years.
Twelve objections have come from neighbours, raising issues such as increased traffic, loss of privacy and land subsidence. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has also objected, saying protected species reports are out of date so they do not know if any plants or animals could be affected.
The planning committee of West Wiltshire District Council was due to decide on the plans last night. Planning officers have recommended approval.
