THE funeral of popular headteacher Nigel Gilhespy was due to take place today.

Hundreds of mourners were expected to attend the Bell Street United Church, in Shaftesbury, to say their final farewell to the former headteacher of Matravers School, in Westbury.

Mr Gilhespy, 59, of Shaftesbury, died on October 28 after being taken ill with a brain tumour. He leaves his wife Elaine and two children Tanya and Jonathan.

After retiring from Matravers School after 19 years at the helm, he became more involved with various charities, including the National Children's Home, where he was a trustee.

Gordon Edington, chairman of NCH trustees, said: "Nigel was highly professional, had the courage to say what needed to be said, contributed with knowledge, charm and sensitivity, and was always prepared to roll his sleeves up and do the difficult as well as the more fun tasks asked of a trustee."

The Rev Bill Lynn, director of pastoral care at NCH, said Mr Gilhespy had made a very real and tangible contribution to the charity.

"It was clear from the outset that Nigel would make an outstanding NCH trustee. He was gifted with an engaging personality, which enabled him to relate well to people from all backgrounds, and in addition he brought a wealth of professional and educational knowledge, so helpful to NCH," he said.

"Much of Nigel's life was dedicated to enhancing opportunities for young people. He will be sadly missed by the Trustees and everyone who knew him at NCH."

A one-minute silence was held in memory of Mr Gilhespy at a meeting of Westbury Town Council, on Monday night.
