A SPECTACULAR firework display and bonfire lit up the skies above Broughton Gifford in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 people.

Friday's annual event held on the village common, raised money for community groups and organisations in Broughton Gifford, and was once again hailed a great success. As well as the fireworks and bonfire, there was also a beer tent, a stall hosted by the local Scout group and a children's roundabout to keep the revellers entertained.

Mike Bailey, a member of Broughton Gifford village hall committee, who has been helping organise the display for almost 30 years said: "It is the single biggest event in the village, and once again it went off really well and everybody seemed to have a good night.

"I would say at least 80 per cent of the people who live in Broughton Gifford were there including everyone from kids in prams to older people walking on sticks."

Last year's event was marred slightly by the behaviour of groups of drunk teenagers and their anti-social behaviour, however this year the problem was brought under control.

"I'd like to say a big thank you to the police for the way they acted to stop some of the youngsters getting drink inside them," said Mr Bailey.
