A DEVOTED grandmother killed in a head-on car crash was collecting her two young granddaughters so they could spend the weekend together.
Mary Brown, 60, of Avon Road, Melksham, died after her Ford Ka2 collided with a Vauxhall Calibre driven by 20-year-old Lewis Phillip-Shergold from Calne, who was also killed.
Mrs Brown's granddaughters Morgan, seven, and Hollie, eight, were passengers in the car at the time of the tragedy, which happened just before 4.30pm on Friday, just south of Tilshead on the A360 Devizes to Salisbury road.
She had taken Morgan in the car to collect Hollie at Coombe Bissett, which is about halfway to Verwood in Dorset where Hollie lives with her mum Katharine.
Grandmother and granddaughters had planned a fun-filled weekend going to the cinema on Saturday and shopping in Bath on Sunday.
Both Morgan and Hollie were taken to Salisbury District Hospital with injuries but have since been discharged and are recovering well.
Mrs Brown's daughter, Katharine Ferris, 36, said her mother was a devoted grandmother.
"Spending time with her grandchildren was mum's main interest, they were literally her life and she would do everything and anything for them," she said.
Mrs Brown's youngest daughter Susan Randell, 33, who lives in Bowerhill said: "Mum was always with the grandchildren and I know seeing them happy made her happy.
"She was looking forward to the weekend with Morgan and Hollie, and always wanted to be involved in what all her grandchildren were doing."
Mrs Brown, who worked in pricing control at Cooper Tires, in Bath Road, Melksham, had been married to her husband Michael for 39 years and the couple spent all their married life living in Melksham.
Mr Brown, 62, said: "I had about 37 phone calls on Monday, some of them from people I've never met, who wanted to pay their respects.
"Mary's boss and workmates have been round and they were absolutely devastated.
"On Monday they said it was just so quiet at work with everybody being so upset, and nobody sat in Mary's chair."
Mrs Brown's funeral will be at West Wilts Crematorium in Semington at 1.30pm on Tuesday, with donations going to Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
