West Region captain Neil Holman (Torbay) and Sean Mason (Teignmouth) shot 61 in the last round in the Glenbrae PGA Fourball Championship at Hesketh to share second place with Dudsbury pair Mark Wiggett and Lee Thompson.

They finished one shot behind Philip Edwards (Notts) and Barry Hurt (Bulwell) although the Devon duo held the clubhouse lead for a long time. The prize for the four runners-up was £1,437 each.

Defending champions Martyn Thompson (Parkstone) and Michael Watson (Weymouth) shared fourth place worth £743 each. Their total of 22-under-par 194 contained 33 pars, 20 birdies and an eagle from rounds of 64 66 64.

They were joined by Cornish pair Richard Sadler (Carlyon Bay) and Tony Nash (Bowood Park).

Wiggett and Thompson started with six-under 66 after making five birdies in the final seven holes. On the second day they made only one par on the front nine - six birdies and successive dropped shots at the fifth and sixth - before dashing home in 30 with five more birdies and an eagle on the last for 11-under-par 61.

Despite a flawless final round of 65 with seven more birdies, they trailed the Midland pair by one shot on 24-under-par 192.

Holman and Mason also shot 61 just at the right time, Holman said: "We dropped one shot on the par-five seventh when I put a ball in the water and then Sean three-putted."
