Taunton's Mark Pavey and Colin Murphy (Vivary Park) represented England in the International Pairs world finals at Celtic Manor after winning the UK final at St Andrews Bay Golf Resort last October.
They were close to the lead against 26 other nations after posting 42 points in the opening round.
But on the second day Murphy, 33, who works at the club's pro shop, was ill with a stomach problem but the pair soldiered on and managed to tot up 38 points and were joint fourth .
Pavey, 36, who runs the Vivary Arms and plays off eight, said: "It was a pity but we had a chance although we missed a few greens and putts. It was a wonderful experience and we'd love to get there again."
But it won't be this year as they failed to win this year's qualifier at the club.
The finals were based in Cardiff for three days starting with the opening ceremony at Cardiff City Hall, and finishing with a gala dinner at the Holland House Hotel after the presentation of the unique trophy, the Honey Cup at historic Cardiff Castle.
After recovering from two strokes retired Filipino businessman Felix Cortez, off 18, and his employee, six-handicapper Gary Sales, were the winners with 86 points.
The event was supported by the Wales Tourist Board and The Greens of Southern Wales.
