Broome Manor's Miles Mackman is hoping to emulate the club's most famous player David Howell and make the breakthrough into golf's big time.

While Howell was smiling his way to another Ryder Cup success, Mackman, aged 20, was winning further events in the west.

First the plus-two handicapper bagged the South West Counties Colts championship with a nine-under-par return of 131 (67 64) at The Bristol. He was three ahead of talented Gloucestershire junior Oliver Glaze (The Kendleshire) and Cornwall's Ben Enoch (Truro), holder of the South West boys' title.

Then he took advantage of a generous gesture by the county's junior organiser Mark Lawrence, the co-owner of Hamptworth Golf Club near Salisbury, to play in the West Region PGA Bowood pro-am.

Lawrence paid for Mackman and two other promising county players Cumberwell Park pair Alistair James and Ashley Monaghan to gain experience under PGA professional conditions.

They partnered Sean Mason from Teignmouth, who used to play against them during his days as a leading Devon county amateur, to a three-stroke victory.

Mackman, the West of England Amateur Open champion at Burnham and Berrow last year, produced probably the round of the season in the Faldo Commemoration Jug at Welwyn Garden City last month.

He set a record that could stand for years with a nine-under-par 61, substantially lower than the best Faldo ever carded on the course where he learned his trade.

Cornwall won the Colts team title with 693 followed by Gloucestershire 705 Wiltshire 708, Dorset 710, Devon 712, Somerset 720.

Mullion's Leo Acklin needed to finish in no worse than second place the first round of the St Enodoc Junior Open to win Cornwall's Junior Order of Merit .

He and then went on to take the trophy to finish ahead of Antony Nash (Newquay) and Anthony Buchanan (China Fleet).
