Gloucestershire county junior Oliver Glaze played the starring role as The Kendleshire won their way to the finals of the Mail on Sunday team competition.

Scratch player Glaze, 16, was called on to play in the decisive sudden-death play-off against Yorkshire club Branshaw, near Keighley, after each side had won twice with one halved at Worsely Hall, Manchester.

With his fellow Kendleshire players and supporters in full voice, he eventually beat his opponent at the fifth extra hole.

They now take part in the semi-finals at the PGA Catalunya Club, near Barcelona in Spain, from November 14-18.

Results: Jason Heaven (off 4) won 5/3, Paul Jenkins (2) halved, Duncan Ferguson (6) lost 2/1, Andy Cousins (3) lost 3/2, Olly Glaze (scratch) won 4/3.

The club beat Filton, Bristol and Clifton, Shirehampton, Droitwich, Royal Porthcawl and Tavistock on the journey that started in the spring.

Team captain Ferguson said: "We have played virtually the same team all the way through. It's a marvellous feat considering 2,965 teams entered. We are all very proud of Olly who has a great future."
