The Chandos Singers are to perform Heinrich Schütz’s The Christmas Story, with seasonal cantatas by Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Gottlieb Goldberg.
The leading Bath chamber choir, conducted by Malcolm Hill, will be joined by soprano Jane Hunt (Angel) and tenor Joe Baker (Evangelist).
The 17th-century German composer’s evocative music uses texts from St Matthew’s and St Luke’s Gospels. The work will be sung in English with strings and recorders.
JS Bach once walked 250 miles to hear Danish–German organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude perform.
Harpsichordist and organist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, associated as performer with Bach’s Goldberg Variations, was also an accomplished 17th-century composer.
The concert will be held in Magdalen Chapel on Holloway, Bath, on Saturday, December 13, at 7.30pm. Tickets at £12, or £5 for students, are available from 01225 463362 and boxoffice@bathfestivals.org.uk
