Carousel, Until Saturday, November 11, Theatre Royal Bath.
Good old Bath Light Operatic Group celebrated 50 years at the Theatre Royal with a sparky performance of musical entertainment.
After a slow start to Act One Carrie, played by Helen Avent, sang a cheerful Mr Snow and June is Busting Out All Over brought the whole company together and had the audience tapping their feet. Billy, played by James Canning, gave a strong and convincing performance including a long soliloquy.
In Act Two You'll Never Walk Alone, whilst an original song, seemed odd to hear away from the football terraces.
All the dancers did a great job, especially the sweet ballet-dancing children, although the stage did seem crowded at times.
Lighting, sound and orchestra were excellent and costumes were colourful - although I'm sure I spotted an M&S shirt along the way.
A great show for young and old and the American accents were generally good, but for my money bad boy Jigger, played by Nick Feierabend, had the most convincing New York gruffness.
The all-white costumes of the players in the up there' scene lent a surreal appearance to Billy's short resurrection. The touching scene with his daughter and wife was so good that it reduced many audience members to tears.
Billy's wife Julie, played by Helen Feierabend, got stronger throughout the play and her character became pivotal later on.
The evening's entertainment went very well and convincingly sucked the audience into the storyline.
The whole company worked hard on the production and deserved success. The audience clearly thought so judging by the applause at the end - may it continue for the next 50 years of BLOGS.
So then, good BLOGS, good play and, for all watching, a reluctant good night'.
