Anime has had a surge in popularity across the globe in the most recent years. With easier accessibility than ever before. Even more so, anime has started being showcased in western cinemas, at a fast rate, with new and upcoming films being shown - the most popular anime films making headlines. For someone who is bored of what is typical in their known media, trying an anime film is the perfect solution.
Anime, originating from Japan, is hand-drawn and computer-generated animation. It is a diverse medium combining many forms of imaginative and individualistic techniques such as graphic art, cinematography, and characterization. Anime can normally be recognised by its amazing voice acting – Japan taking great pride in its voice acting abilities. As well as character features, for example, large, emotive eyes, distinctly coloured hair, and eye-catching outfits. (All depending on what genre of anime you indulge yourself in.) When you need an escape from the real world and its struggles, anime offers a way out to a truly fantastical world. Due to the impact of anime, the birth of many subcultures has even occurred, including role-playing, computer-gaming, and cosplaying. Offering a way for mundane folks to enter a space of similarity to anime.
In cinemas, you can expect rereleases of your favourite anime films or completely new films such as ‘Suzume’.
Either subbed in English or dubbed in English, Suzume has taken the anime community by storm. Makoto Shinkai’s newest movie features young 17-year-old Suzume on an adventure, alongside a mysterious young man, who has the power to shut strange doors that have been appearing all over Japan. This emotional fantasy adventure film not only has beautiful animation with careful detail, but amazing music to accompany it. Featuring ‘Radwimps’, a Japanese rock band to truly give the ambience Suzume deserves. With an average score of 93% on ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ and a 7.8/10 on ‘IMDb’, this anime film is a must watch for young or old.
‘I wasn’t expecting so many older people enjoying it, and here to watch it, but it was a beautiful film. Able to be enjoyed by all.’ Shella Weal-Stout recounts having watched Suzume in the cinema recently.
In 2021, ‘Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train’ hit the cinemas causing an uproar, as it belongs to the Demon Slayer franchise, a highly popular fantasy action anime. Again, with an average score of 98% on ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ and 8.2 on ‘IMDb’. The animation is vibrant and clean. Demon Slayer is an absolute art exhibit turned show that is sure to turn heads, if not truly immersing you into the brilliant storytelling and unique art style.
Rereleases include many Studio Ghibli movies such as ‘Spirited Away’ or ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. Studio Ghibli is a famous Japanese animation studio, arguably creating some of the best known and loved anime’s coming from Japan. Unlike other studios, Studio Ghibli still only uses traditional, hand-drawn animation methods, recognisable by its stunning imagery and child-like animation. Each Studio Ghibli film has a unique story. Able to make you feel a part of it and sit reflecting at the beauty you just watched.
