Selection of Italian wines
HAVING never been to a proper Italian restaurant before, my partner Fran suggested we try Breschetta Italian Ristorante in Trowbridge.
It’s a very stylish and modern place with the occasional Italian-themed picture on the wall and classical Italian music playing in the background.
We are shown to our table and order our drinks which is a bottle of white house wine for the price of £13.95, and despite not usually being a wine drinker it was quite pleasant and refreshing.
For my starter I chose slices of mozzarella in breadcrumbs with Italian coleslaw, costing £6.95, which was superb as the cheese was very fresh and soft while the coleslaw provided flavour and a kick.
Fran had baked mozzarella and tomatoes wrapped in parma ham which she thought was appetising.
Wanting to try something other than the stereotypical Italian dishes of pasta or pizza for my main, I decided to go with a sirloin steak with potatoes and fresh salad for £14.95.
The size of the steak was generous and moist and having asked for it to be medium that’s exactly what I got, with the potatoes well cooked but not overdone.
Fran had pan fried duck with cooked vegetables and found it delicious, although wished she’d asked for the duck to be less cooked which the waiter had suggested.
For dessert we decided to share a crème brulee for £5.25 and an amaretti biscuit with coffee, rum and chocolate cooked cream for £4.50, and both of them were great but not too sweet.
The service was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for the friendly and helpful waiters who were prompt for all the courses despite having a number of other tables to serve.
Total bill came to £79.45 which perhaps seems a lot but for two starters, mains, deserts and a bottle and a half of wine, it seems reasonable priced for the excellent quality.
