With conditions on a bright Sunday morning ideal for rugby, there was a contrast in styles between Trowbridge and Bradford U10s, with the more physically imposing Trowbridge team coming out on top.
There was some excellent rugby played as Trowbridge ran out winners in 2 of the 3 games played with the third being drawn. It is a credit to both clubs that a total of 38 players were involved in the matches.
In the first match, Bradford tried to play an expansive, running game but were countered by the bigger Trowbridge players who contained their backs well and took the game to the opposition.
This was most notable in the scrums where they won a steady supply of possession, allowing scrum half Jamie Howell to score the first try. This was followed by two forward's tries, the first by Luke Dobson and the second by Jacob Marshman.
Despite endeavour to run the ball by both sides, it was steady rucking and driving by Trowbridge that was the difference between the two sides.
In the second game, the alternate teams played and the first half ended in stalemate. However, towards the end of the period, the Trowbridge forwards again started to impose themselves.
Having learned from the experience of the first match, Bradford ran the ball wide at every opportunity but came up against a resolute Trowbridge defence.
The second half was in contrast to the first with a total of five Trowbridge scores, with four from Will Stockley and one from Jamie Howell. Bradford replied with a score of their own.
A final short game was played to allow every player to have game time.
This proved a much more even affair, with Bradford scoring first as the ball was passed well to their winger who outflannked the Trowbridge defence.
This remained the score until well into the second half when Will Thompson sold the entire Bradford defence a sublime dummy, sauntering across the line. Bradford came close to scoring again but a great cover tackle by David Phillips saved the score.
A good day of rugby was enjoyed. Trowbridge U10s now have an enviable record with 27 games played, 21 won, with a single draw and just five losses.
However, Bradford must be congratulated for trying to play an attractive although ultimately unsuccessful game.
