Four Royal Air Forces Association Trowbridge Branch Committee members attended the 100th birthday celebrations of Group Captain Eugene (Tubby) Vielle RAF (Retd) at Chantry Court Retirement Village, Westbury, on May 1.
About 70 guests, including relatives, fellow residents, cadets from 68 (Westbury) Squadron ATC and a representative from RAF Boscombe Down attended.
As well as a telegram from the Queen and tributes from relatives and friends, staff from RAF Boscombe Down presented Gp Capt Vielle with a picture of a Harvard training aircraft flying over Stonehenge.
Committee member Mike Sale gave a summary of Gp Capt Vielle’s RAF career. After training at the RAF College Cranwell, he was commissioned in 1934 by King George V. By the time he retired from the RAF in 1957, he had flown in 150 different types of aircraft.
