ARMED police raided an address in Trowbridge last night and arrested a man in connection with an attempted armed robbery at the town's railway station yesterday.
The man is being held in custody at Wiltshire Police's divisional headquarters in Melksham and is awaiting questioning in connection with the raid, in which a ticket office attendant was tied up and attacked by two men shortly before 4pm.
Two young skateboarders alerted the police after they disturbed the alleged offenders when they went in to the public toilets.
Acting Detective Inspector Matt Jones said: “This was obviously a very traumatic experience for the member of staff. But it could have been much worse had they not been disturbed by the two lads.”
Wiltshire Police's helicopter and sniffer dogs were called in to search the area around the station and scenes of crime officers were working late into the night collecting evidence.
The Trowbridge man was arrested at about 9.30pm yesterday.
Police are appealing for any other witnesses to call them on 0845 408 7000.
An exclusive interview with the two skateboarders will appear in this week's Wiltshire Times and Chippenham News, which will be in the shops tonight.
