Wiltshire recycling centre blaze tackled by fire crews

Crews rushed to a recycling facility off the A342 Monument Hill, near Devizes, shortly after 3.20pm on Thursday, May 24.

Over 40 firefighters from stations including Devizes, Trowbridge, Pewsey, Gillingham, Chippenham, Marlborough, Swindon, and Amesbury, along with a water carrier from Wilton, were drafted in to tackle the blaze.

Efforts to extinguish the fire continued into the night and have been ongoing throughout Friday morning (May 24).

While one crew remains at the scene at the time of writing, the response has been significantly scaled back.

The incident caused large amounts of smoke on Thursday and residents were warned to shut their windows and doors.

Temporary traffic lights remain in the area and are causing some slow traffic.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Good progress is being made in dealing with a fire at a recycling facility off Monument Hill in Stert, near Devizes.

“Firefighters have been working with on-site personnel to extinguish the fire and move unaffected waste away from the fire.

“The high-volume pump from Christchurch was mobilised on Thursday afternoon to provide a better water supply.

“Temporary traffic lights have therefore been set up outside the site, we apologise for any inconvenience caused by these.”
