A NEW festival is being held in Chapmanslade to raise money for the The Awamu Foundation, a social enterprise which works with orphaned children living in the slums of Uganda’s capital city.
Together Festival, featuring renowned music producer A Guy Called Gerald and many more, will take place in Thoulstone Park from Friday, August 5 – Monday, August 8 with plenty to entertain the whole family.
Money made from the event, including ticket sales, will go towards the foundation, soon to be charity, which was started up by Emma Scullion in 2012 to help women in Kampala ensure the most vulnerable children in their community get the education and skills vital to their future.
She said: “We’re currently supporting 108 children in the community but we want to help far more, in the region of 3,000.
“To do that, we need to engage more people with the project and raise more money, so we came up with the bonkers idea of throwing a festival.
“People have been really supportive so far and got behind the idea by donating their time to help organise it.
“We’re hoping that as many people come along to have a great weekend while raising vital funds at the same time. It will be a brilliant festival for ages.”
Joining A Guy Called Gerald on the line-up are the likes of old-school jungle DJ Uncle Dugs and Senegalese star Jali Fily Cissokho.
There will also be crafts, workshops, den making and, a bouncy castle and food stalls.
The event is run by a team of volunteers and all acts are contributing their time for free in order to raise money for Awamu’s work, with 100 per cent of all profits raised from Together going directly to aid children in the slums of Kampala.
