WILTSHIRE Police have launched an investigation after a woman was found dead at a property in Chippenham.
The woman, in her fifties but yet to be formally identified, was found dead at a house on Charter Road just after 6.30am this morning.
A 53-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the death and is currently in custody at Melksham Police Station.
The woman’s family have been informed and a post mortem examination will take place.
A neighbour said: “I didn’t hear anything and the first I knew about it was when I came outside at about 8am for my morning cigarette and saw the police tape.
“I knew her well, I probably lived next door to her for about three or four years and it’s a shock.
“You would always see her around the estate in her wheelchair and I always used to speak with her all the time.
“The police have been good though in dealing with the situation.”
Peter Habkirk, a local resident, said: “It’s just a sad situation, I’ve lived here for about 25 years and everyone is just numbed by this.”
Police are treating the death as unexplained and an investigation has now been launched by the Major Crime Investigation Team
DI Steve Kirby said: “The local community will undoubtedly be concerned following news of this incident and I would like to reassure the public that we have a team of detectives working on the case.
“Officers will be carrying out important enquiries throughout the day in Charter Road and surrounding area and I would like to thank residents for their understanding in advance.
“I would like to appeal for anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the area of Charter Road, Chippenham recently.
“All information will be treated in the strictest confidence and may be vital to assist our investigation.”
