Gavin Gunning said that changes will have to be made to how Swindon Town handle away games following their latest defeat on the road.

Town’s meek 2-0 defeat at Blundell Park against Grimsby Town in their final away game of the campaign meant that Swindon will finish the season with just three wins on the road, only one of which came on a Saturday.

Only six times since the introduction of the four-tier structure have Swindon won fewer away games and they have never had fewer away wins in the fourth tier itself, eclipsing the previous low watermark of four from the 1983/84 season.

When asked about the team’s dismal away record this season, Gunning said that Town would have to change their approach when on the road next year in an effort to stop being bullied.

He said: “It is unacceptable [to only have three away wins].

“Possibly [we might have to change the style], I think that when we go away from home, a lot of the time we are getting bullied.

“We just need to manage games better, be physically stronger, and that will 100 per cent take some changes.

“I think that it is important to learn from where we have gone wrong and we need to rectify that it is clear.”

In the final away game of the season, Swindon once again failed to take anything back home with them from Wiltshire and failed to even have a shot on target.

Gunning was critical of his side for their lack of punch in attack and the way they failed to summon any kind of fightback after going a goal down.

He said: “Today we were a bit blunt and took the wrong decision a lot of the time, but that happens sometimes.

“Don’t get me wrong on the running stats on Tuesday, we did cover some proper distance, but maybe that is the thing and we are lethargic travelling up to Grimsby.

“Those are just excuses and the fans have travelled five hours to come here and we need to show more.

“In the first half, we were dominant, we played some great stuff but then in the second half we came out and were a different team.

“We need to be honest with ourselves as a group and say that the second half was not of the level that we need to be at.”
