Plans for 25 new homes outside Swindon have been refused by Wiltshire Council and generated over 230 objections from members of the public.

The application concerned approximately 1.5 hectares of land on the northern side of Pavenhill, on the north-western edge of Purton.

This location has been the subject of two previous planning applications, and an appeal, for similar proposals within the last five years.

The latest plans would have required the demolition of an existing home to allow vehicular and pedestrian access to Pavenhill.

Provisions for 10 affordable homes and public open space were included in the application.

Purton Parish Council objected to the proposal and Wiltshire Council received over 230 further letters from members of the public.

Concerns were raised over a lack of village facilities as well as a potential “overdevelopment” of the area.

The application said: “The proposal represents a sustainable residential development which will deliver much-needed family housing whilst creating an attractive and long-lasting place to live for years to come.”

However, Wiltshire Council found that the development was contrary to the core policies of its strategy, due to the scale of the plans in a countryside location.

It also noted that the applicant had failed to secure adequate provisions for the necessary infrastructure to make the application proposal “acceptable in planning terms.”
