The design and layout have been revealed for 57 new homes due to be built on disused land in Devizes.

The plans show the details of the development site north of Quakers Road and south of Parkfields, formerly part of Wiltshire Police’s HQ on London Road.

Previously described by Devizes councillor Judy Rose as “dreadful”, the proposal was initially rejected by Wiltshire Council in February 2022 over traffic safety concerns.

However, the developers were successful when taking the decision to appeal the following year.

Redcliffe Homes has now submitted a reserved matters application for consideration which relates to the appearance and scale of the development.

It indicates that the homes will be organised into two distinct residential blocks, positioned north and south of a central “green lung.”

The developer has opted for a majority of two-storey dwellings, with larger detached units in the southern area and most of those in the north destined to be semi-detached.

The suggested architectural style is reported as “meticulously crafted” and based on the local character.

Red brick will be predominantly used for the façades, with the roofs primarily featuring brown tiles.

The application notes: “Overall, the proposed development represents a harmonious blend of residential, green, and transportation infrastructure, poised to enrich the local landscape and enhance the quality of life for existing and potential residents.

“Through careful consideration of design principles and a commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable community, this proposal is believed to hold tremendous promise for the future.”

It concludes: “It is considered that the proposals are of an appropriate scale, high quality design and will integrate well with the character and appearance of this part of the town preserving the setting of heritage assets and the amenity of neighbouring properties and new residents.

“Redcliffe Homes is keen to progress the scheme at the earliest opportunity and to deliver high quality homes for a wide range of people as part of an attractive development which will make a positive impact on Devizes and the surrounding area.”

The site, which is currently open grassland, is described as having “no formal use other than the four disused tennis courts in the southwestern corner of the site.”

The decision deadline for Wiltshire Council is Friday, July 12, 2024.
